V4V Edmonton Volunteer
When I came to Canada, I did not know English. I kept repeating LINC classes, but I was not making the progress I hoped for. I eventually received my Canadian citizenship because of my age, but becoming a citizen did not mean that I had the English skills I needed to live independently.
I continued attending LINC classes because I knew I needed to learn, but I still struggled with English in my everyday life. Today, learning English through V4V gives me great joy and hope for the future. I am gaining confidence and becoming more comfortable communicating with the people and systems around me. I have learned that language is not only important for finding or keeping a job. English is part of everyday life here in Edmonton. We need it to communicate, understand information, ask questions, access services, and participate in our community. For me, learning English is not simply about learning a language. It is about being able to live my life with greater independence, confidence, and hope.

My experience with V4V has taught me that helping others is an act of dignity.
When we help people become more self-reliant, we are not simply transferring skills. We are strengthening families, communities, and society.
Many people arrive in Canada or the United States carrying valuable knowledge and experience from their countries of origin. They may have been farmers, teachers, business owners, parents, or community leaders. Others may have had little opportunity for formal education. Yet migration can place people in unfamiliar systems where language, technology, and institutional knowledge can determine how easily they are able to participate. V4V creates an environment where people can rebuild confidence, develop practical skills, and navigate their new surroundings without losing their dignity. One issue that has particularly stood out to me is privacy. When parents cannot communicate independently, children may be required to translate information involving their parents’ medical, financial, or personal lives. Building language capacity therefore protects more than independence. It also protects family dignity and privacy. Volunteering has taught me that teaching is reciprocal. When we teach, we learn as well. Reflection strengthens our research skills, deepens our understanding of the community, and builds stronger relationships between people. I have also come to see that a classroom can become much more than a place of instruction. It can become a place of connection, reflection, emotional expression, and community wellness—a place where people feel heard and where their frustrations, questions, and aspirations can be acknowledged. V4V has shown me that meaningful community development begins with people and relationships. When we strengthen individuals, we strengthen families. When we strengthen families, we strengthen communities. And when communities become stronger, society becomes stronger.

Supporting others through V4V has been incredibly rewarding. Together, we're building stronger communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
V4V Global is guided by Participatory Capacity Theory, a framework that explains how people develop the ability to participate meaningfully in their communities. The principle is simple:
People flourish when they are seen, heard, equipped, and empowered to participate.
